How to keep your probationary License
Probationary License – Passenger Vehicle
To obtain a probationary license, you must:
Have held a learner’s license for at least :
- 12 months, or
- 8 months, if you pass a practical course in a driving shcool recognized by CAA-Québec or the Quebec Safety League.
- Pass the SAAQ’s road test, which is on appointment only.
- A probationary license is valid for 24 months or until age 25, whichever comes first. During this period, specific penalties apply in the event of a violation of the restrictions that apply to this license: a 3-month license suspension, if you have a total of 4 demerit points. The probationary period is subsequently extended an additional 3 months. For holders of a regular driver’s license, the number of demerit points entered on a driving record must remain below 15.
- A probationary license holder cannot ride as an accompanying driver to assist a learner.
As the holder of a probationary license, you are prohibited from driving if you have consumed alcohol. If this restriction is violated, your license will be immediately suspended for 90 days, 4 demerit points will be added to your driving record resulting in an additional 3-month suspension and a $438 to $865 fine.
