Overweight: Truck Load and Dimension Standards
In Quebec, heavy trucks must comply with the weight and dimension limits set out in the Règlement sur les normes de charges et de dimensions. Road enforcement officers check these standards at weigh stations and with portable scales.
Fines That Add Up Quickly
In the case of excess weight, the fine increases with the number of excess kilograms. The owner, the operator and, in some cases, the shipper may be targeted. The offence is also recorded in the heavy vehicle owner and operator record (PEVL).
Common Situations
- Excessive total weight or axle weight;
- Oversize load without a special movement permit;
- Failure to comply with load restrictions during the spring thaw period;
- Excess dimensions (height, width, length).
Can You Contest?
Yes. Several elements can be verified: the certification and calibration of the scale, the weighing method, the load distribution, the validity of a special permit, or the effective dates of thaw restrictions. An error on any of these points can lead to the statement of offence being dismissed or the fine being reduced.
