Drug-Impaired Driving: Zero Tolerance in Quebec
Since 2018, Quebec has applied a zero-tolerance policy on drugs and driving: it is prohibited to drive if a detectable amount of cannabis (THC) or another drug is present in your saliva.
Roadside Checks
If a police officer suspects the presence of drugs, they may demand a saliva test or standardized coordination tests. Depending on the results, the officer may make an arrest and require an evaluation by a drug recognition evaluator or a blood sample.
Penalties
- Code de la sécurité routière: immediate 90-day licence suspension when the presence of drugs is detected;
- Criminal Code: a charge of impaired driving by drug carries the same consequences as for alcohol, including a criminal record and a driving prohibition.
It is also prohibited to consume cannabis in a road vehicle or an off-road vehicle.
