PEVL Safety Rating: How to Protect Your Business
Every owner or operator of heavy vehicles (PEVL) registered with the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ) receives a safety rating: satisfactory, conditional or unsatisfactory.
The PEVL record
The SAAQ monitors the conduct of each business: offences committed by drivers and by the business, collisions, and vehicles being put out of service. When a threshold for the size of the fleet is reached, the file may be forwarded to the CTQ.
The consequences
The CTQ may summon the business to a hearing and impose conditions, or even an unsatisfactory rating, which prohibits the operation of heavy vehicles. For a transport company, its livelihood is at stake.
How to protect yourself
- Do not pay statements of offence automatically: paying is pleading guilty, and the offence is added to your record;
- Have a lawyer review each statement of offence;
- Put follow-up measures in place (training, maintenance, hours-of-service monitoring);
- Prepare seriously if a CTQ hearing is scheduled.
